The Producer’s Notebook
Not long ago, a friend asked me for some advice about video. He’d spent years as a very talented still photographer and had learned all the video functions and settings on his camera, but he said he was still struggling with what he called “the big picture.” He started asking what I think about before a shoot, how I prepare, and what’s actually going through my head while I’m filming. Not camera settings or technical details, but the decisions behind the decisions.
That’s when the idea for The Producer’s Notebook hit me.
This is where I’ll look back at some of my past projects from the perspective of planning, producing, filming, and everything I learned along the way. Some entries will focus on a specific topic. Others will simply be a behind the scenes look at the project and the thinking that shaped it. And… I’m going to touch on a couple that never saw the light of day.
I’m not entirely sure where this section will lead, and I kind of like that. At the very least, it’ll give me a chance to revisit some memorable adventures. And if you ever decide to work with me, I hope it gives you a clearer picture of how I think long before the camera starts rolling.
